The History of The Sacajawea

The Sacajawea historic photo

The Sacajawea was built by the Army Corp of Engineers and launched in 1936 and originally christened,  "Robert Gray". She was built near Seattle Washington for the purpose of surveying the Alaskan ocean floor. In 1936 Alaska was not yet a state and it was important for US interests to have some activity there. She went on to fight in WWII and later did important resource surveys both in Alaska and SF Bay.

  • She can accommodate up to 150 guests for a docked event.

  • She can accommodate up to 12 guests for a charter cruise.

  • She is 127' long and weighs in at 400 tons of riveted high-iron steel.

  • Originally diesel-electric, she was repowered in the 70's with a 750 hp Caterpillar diesel engine.

  • She has 4 generators, a dive compressor, a desalinator, crane and helipad!

  • She was awarded the National Historic Registry status in July 2022!

Reviews

"I had a wonderful time cruising the inside passage of Alaska aboard the Sacajawea. The highlights were seeing the many bears, and whales well as the amazing glaciers and scenery. The Sacajawea herself is very impressive! She is much bigger than you imagine she will be and although not pretentious (this vessel was built to do hard work in Alaska, after all!), she is extremely beautiful with classic lines and original wood and metal work. It makes you feel like you've gone back in time to be aboard. My cabin was comfortable and much more spacious than other charters I've been on. The salon is very roomy and comfortable and a great place to hang out on the couches or to watch a movie." - Charter Guest

"We chartered the Sacajawea for my husband's birthday and it was a huge hit! We had the maximum 12 guests, and brought on pizza and wine for a lovely 2 hour sunset cruise out of Jack London Square. The lounge area is especially charming, and great for people who want to warm up if it gets chilly on the Bay. The crew were communicative, friendly, and did an amazing job hosting us. We even got to saber open a bottle of bubbly!" - Kera, Charter Guest

"The crew is amazing and wonderful. They did a great job on keeping everything safe and healthy. And there's a huge history with the boat that is just wonderful to hear.
Overall, if you have a small group, this is a spectacular opportunity. We had booked the Sacajawea for a big milestone birthday and was really happy we did!" - Diane, Charter Guest

"Being on the Sacajawea is an experience like none other I have had. The ship is so beautiful in a way that modern things are not. She is built to last and that shows. When underway it is a magical experience. She is very powerful and steady and her engine really hums. I found the crew very kind and professional." - Charter Guest
